Expressionismus fuit motus modernisticus, primum in poesi et pictura, plerumque in Germania saeculo vicensimo ineunte natus. Eius proprietas maximi momenti est mundum solum e sententia subiectiva repraesentare, quem effectui animi penitus distorquit ad modos notionesque evocandas.[2][3] Artifices expressionistici significationem experientiae animi motuum, non realitatem corpoream, communicare volebant.[4][5]

Expressionismus modus avant-garde ante bellum mundanum primum ortus est, sed populo Germanico tempore Rei Publicae Vimarianae,[2] praecipue Berolini, gratissimus manebat. Variissimas attingebat artes, inter quas architectura, cinematographia, litterae, musica, pictura, saltatio, theatrum.

Nomen motui proprium aliquando quoddam angst (Latine:anxietas) significat. Sensu autem latiore, pictores aetatum priscarum, sicut Matthaeus Grünewald et El Greco, expressionistici aliquando appellantur, quamquam vocabulum operibus saeculi vicensimi usitate adhibetur. Expressionisticus animi conspectus singulorum hominum quoddam responsum positivismo aliisque artis modis, sicut Naturalismo et Impressionismo, aliquando habetur.[6]
