Hi, I had a talk with Ioshus and we want to add a note to the decennium template and somewhere the year in roman numbers. To manage this we need a second parameter, the roman number, see 1000. Could you add a second parameter, please?

The note should be similar to this: haec est de anno, ut de numero legas, vide PAGENAME (numerus).

"Numeri romani list" shall be a generated (Perl?) list of the Roman numbers from 1 - 2000, using the "id" attribute for the numbers. I think, this should work.

The discussion is at Vicipaedia:Taberna#numeri.

Thanks! --Rolandus 17:09, 28 Decembris 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CommonsTicker: Ticker Trouble

[fontem recensere]

Hello

As you may have noticed, there have been some problems with CommonsTicker lately:

 • first, the toolserver was down. After it was back up, we had to wait for fresh database dumps.
 • also, many updates where failing because ticker pages where growing too large. Updates that went through half-way somtimes also caused entries to be posted multiple times, making the problem worse.
 • when I tried to improve performance, I introduced a bug that caused the ticker to post trash sometimes. I disabled the ticker again when I was told about it, and I have fixed all effected pages yesterday (I hope I didn't miss any).

To sort this out completely, I have to rewrite parts of CommonsTicker. For now, I will enable the ticker again for most wikis, but not for the ones that where having most trouble - namely de-wikipedia, en-wikinews, eo-wikipedia, es-wikipedia, fr-wikipedia, ja-wikipedia, ru-wikipedia, simple-wikipedia and zh-wikipedia. I'll have to investigate those more closely.

So please keep an eye on CommonsTicker in the next days - if there is any more trouble, please tell me, preferrably on meta:User_talk:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker.

Can you confirm that the latin verb for "to paint" is pingere? And if so, do you know wether the perfect stem is ping- or pix- (or something else)? Cannot find my latin schoolbooks. Skvattram 23:24, 10 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

pingo, pingis, pingere, pinxi, pictus. Greetings, --UV 23:30, 10 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure it is pinxi, since, many or most third conjugation verbs with -ng or -nc in the present stem misses the n of that combination in the perfect stem, like vinco - vici?

Thank you anyway. Danke schön. Skvattram 23:46, 10 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I am (perfect is pinxi but past participle is pictus without n), I looked it up in Stowasser. Greetings, --UV 23:55, 10 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As my babel box indicated, even those with excellent latin are often prone to make ghastly mistakes when translating a lot of it! Besides, I owed you one =]. But seriously, I noticed now that when we "monstrare praevisa" the alignment is a bit off...for instance on the left of the interface where the interwikis and other one click buttons are appear now at the very bottom of the page... Anything that can be done about this? Bye for now.--Ioshus (disp) 14:11, 17 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I could not reproduce this problem in my browser but I fixed a small problem in MediaWiki:Edittools that might have caused the symptoms you described. Did this solve the problem or is the weird arrangement still there? --UV 23:36, 17 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! Thanks.--Ioshus (disp) 03:14, 18 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing, not sure if you planned it this way. There is no caveat at the top of a mediawiki recensio page, like there used to be. Given that only we sysops can edit it, I'm not sure we really need such a disclaimer, obviously we know when we are editing mediawiki it will affect the interface. I just thought I'd ask to see if you had intended this or if it were an accident.--Ioshus (disp) 05:22, 19 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I definitely did not plan it this way. Possibly a bug was introduced into the software when the "cascading block" feature was implemented a few days ago. I have asked someone knowledgeable about this, will report back.
de:Benutzer:Raymond confirmed the bug you found (bugzilla:8715). It is already fixed in the software (rev:19519), the warning message will reappear in a few hours. Thanks a lot! --UV 23:14, 20 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

which I think might be movenda to Formula:Monstrare. It is on many english and italian pages en:Template:Hidden. We can't seem to get it to work here. If you're interested, and have the time to mess around, its exact opposite would also be good. A Formula:Celare, by which a section might be hidden. Or is there already some way to do this with syntax? In specific we are talking about the picture on Eiaculatum which it might be ok to keep if we had the ability to hide it/display it.--Ioshus (disp) 18:49, 20 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I'll give it a try tonight. --UV 18:51, 20 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Formula:Monstrare seems to work now, see Disputatio:Eiaculatum. If there are any technical problems (in particular: anyone using Mozilla and having problems?), please tell me. Regarding Formula:Celare, I still have to think a bit on how to realize this best, without unnecessary duplication of too much JavaScript code which needs to be loaded and executed on each page load. CommonsTicker: CommonsTicker, The Next Generation

[fontem recensere]

I am currently testing a new version of CommonsTicker (dubbed CommonsTicker NG) on the german Wikipedia - problems with ticker pages growing too large made a partial rewrite necessary. Most changes are "under the hood", the larges change for users is in the way the ticker page is structured and updated:

CommonsTicker will now create a subpage for each day, and include this as a template on the ticker page. New entries for a given day are added to the respective subpage without modifying existing entries on that subpage. Old subpages (sections) are removed automatically from the main ticker page - per default, 7 sections are kept (days for which there are no entries are not counted). Please check that your ticker page has both start- and end-markers for the region where CommonsTicker should post (see m:User:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker#Ticker_Page); everything between the markers will be replaced. If the markers are missing, the entire page is replaced.

When I have finished testing CommonsTicker NG, I will activate the new version on the wikis where CommonsTicker is currently disabled due to problems with page size (the large projects I mentioned in the last announcement). When all goes well, I will start to switch other wikis to NG one by one, as seems convenient. If you want the new version soon, or you don't want it yet for some reason, please tell me about it on m:User:Duesentrieb/CommonsTicker#Change_Requests.

Nomina quasi aequipollentia

[fontem recensere]

In pagina nostra, mutasti operae meae ad opera mea ; verum tamen:

opus, operis, n., Anglice: 'work, labour, service; building; fortification; book; workmanship; deed, action'
opera, -ae, f., Anglice: 'pains, exertion, work, labour; task; service'

The latter is a genuine Latin word, and L&S makes this distinction: "opus is used mostly of the mechanical activity of work, as that of animals, slaves, and soldiers ; opera supposes a free will and desire to serve." I was thinking of the latter, as most my contributions have been motivated by "a free will and desire to serve." IacobusAmor 14:05, 15 Februarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can see the distinction in the formula : "Opus est mihi xxxxre." No such thing as "Opera est mihi yyyyre."--Ioshus (disp) 15:54, 15 Februarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the instructive explanation! I apologize for deteriorating what I meant to improve. I'll remember opera, -ae f. now … Thanks, and sorry about that! --UV 20:33, 15 Februarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just asking myself whether we should treat links to the Vicipaedia namespace as internal or external. If internal means "part of the encyclopaedia" they are external, but technically the Vicipaedia namespace is "internal". Hm ... ;-) We should have an explicit policy about that. --Rolandus 13:34, 17 Februarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree we should have an explicit policy about that (on Vicipaedia:Nexus?). In my view, there might be a section titled "Vide etiam" with a list of internal links to related pages that have not yet been linked to in the text above, and there might be a section titled "Nexus externi" (this may be titled "Nexus externus" if there is only one link) with external links. Links to other Wikimedia projects should be external links (e. g. the link to commons: which should in my view be the first link in the external links section). I have no particular preference whether links to the Vicipaedia namespace should be considered internal or external. --UV 22:50, 17 Februarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I slightly prefer to put the Vicipaedia:xxx links into the nexus externus section. However, if we want to change that later, this could be done by a bot, since Vicipaedia:xxx links can be detected automatically, I think. --Rolandus 20:25, 19 Februarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you just look again at your edit to the word praefecturis in this stub? I'm sure there must be a good reason for it, but I can't guess what it is! Best wishes -- Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 13:19, 5 Martii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out! I just wanted to get rid of the use of the template N here and I wanted to convert praefectur to praefecturis (I find the latter form easier to read and there is no need to keep the template embedded within the page). In order to do this, I typed , which ought to put the template text right into the page. In this instance, however, it went havoc. Thanks for pointing this out so that I won't add similar garbage to more pages … --UV 21:22, 5 Martii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I see! Is it better practice not to overuse the N template? Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 21:32, 5 Martii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it does not really matter. Yes, templates do use processor cycles on wikimedia's servers, but that is not something we would really need to be concerned about. I had an exchange of views with Myces at Disputatio Formulae:N, but at that time I did not yet know that "subst-ing" the template causes garbage to be inserted into the page. In short: If you prefer to use this template, just do so freely! --UV 21:37, 5 Martii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

B. Ioshus fragst. Grüße, --UV 13:11, 13 Maii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In most cases I use commons, but when I'm short on time I load the images directly on it.wiki /la.wiki because it's easier. About the photo of Merry Del Val I don't know who was the auctor. I took the image from the book "I grandi nomi del XX secolo, I Papi, De Agostini, Novara 1974, pag. 40." and under "Iconografia" there wasn't any useful information. Though I believe that in this case the auctor shoud have been died from more of 70 years (somebody who can take a official photo of a Pope was sure at his time a known photographer), I agree with you that's better to delete it. These people must be mad. Haven't they got any friends who know English (see their site)? Haven't they thought for a moment about which Wikipedias are really worth spamming (note their selection of Nahuatl and Latin)? Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 17:29, 7 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As many good sites link to wikipedias and wikipedias usually link to good sites, wikipedias generally have a good page rank in search engine algorithms and are therefore an interesting target for spammers who wish to promote their website('s page rank). Note the sophisticated way in which they proceeded: creating an account with a name that does not arouse suspicion and making only a few edits, in the hope that no one will notice the overall plan (no, I am not paranoid ;-) ) --UV 17:35, 7 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tip -- it's kept me busy for the last several hours researching what this guy's been doing. It apparently involves several hundred throw-away accounts, 15+ domains and spam across 50+ wikipedias.
And you're right -- this is all about Google-love. Even though Wikipedia codes its links "nofollow", there are still perceived values to many link-spammers to hitting Wikipedia. (Yahoo doesn't use nofollow + many Wikipedia mirrors don't bother to include the nofollow attribute).
You and your cohort run a very tight operation spam-wise and make a great early-warning system for widespread cross-wiki spamming. This is the third big spam operation flagged as a result of spamming la.wikipedia -- a big mistake.
The Wikimedia spam blacklist is used by several hundred other sites that run the same MediaWiki software in their own filtering. There are also rumours Google, Yahoo, etc. may also consult our blacklist when deciding who to blacklist from their search results for search engine spamming. All in all, spammers do more harm than good spamming us.
Once again, thank you very much. --A. B. 03:40, 8 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

De vicifontibus

Salve UV, do you know how does Vicifons work? as any other normal wiki? I have a Latin chronicle of the Visigoths that I would like to put there, but I do not really know how. Is anyone here a magistrate in vicifons? I have asked other people and they have refered me back to you--Xaverius 18:39, 18 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

technically, vicifons works exactly like vicipaedia, as they both use the same wiki software ("mediawiki"). The conventions might be a bit different, but probably not much. Just open an account there and go ahead. s:Usor:Francesco Gabrielli is a sysop there, and s:Usor:OrbiliusMagister seems to be quite active there. Hope all is well with you! --Ioshus (disp) 00:25, 20 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, we cannot modify the user groups. I think it is no big problem to leave scintu unprotected as I am sure a number of people have this template on their watchlist and any vandalism would be noticed and reverted very quickly. Greetings, --UV 21:30, 22 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fortasse. Sed etiam habemus alia glossaria. Movenda in vicilibros? Aut movenda in spatium nominale Vicipaedia:, si hae paginae auxilium praebunt in paginas encyclopaedicas creando? --UV 19:29, 26 Iulii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
--Alex1011 21:01, 26 Iulii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Tum translationes libenter addi possunt. Vale! --UV 18:24, 27 Iulii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think this would be a good solution. At the moment, moving something away from Vicipaedia is similar to "removing" it, since the other projects are less developed yet. Someone might say, that's because we are not moving stuff to there, but I think we should -- for practical reasons -- develope such content here and move it later. So the "Vicipaedia:" namespace is good for me. Maybe we should have a template move to Vicipaedia namespace? --Rolandus 07:59, 28 Iulii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Formula:Flagicon

[fontem recensere]

Hi again! I'm going to be creating a table soon containing a lot of flags. I notice that we have Formula:Flagicon, but we don't have individual pages on country data. Is there another solution? Harrissimo.

Hm, I find flagicon and the other related templates rather confusing. In my view, the simplest thing would be just to go ahead and to create the table. Note, however, that the flag of a particular country may have changed several times in history. "Country data" is rather difficult to store in our wiki software (which is a software primarily designed to host text that can be freely edited, not so much for managing structurized data that would typically be found in databases). --UV 13:56, 4 Novembris 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maps of France

I don't know if you can see an explanation for this, UV: the maps of France that used to appear in the infobox Commune-Franciae, which calls Frageoloc, don't appear any more. This has happened just in the last few days, I guess. No change has been made to the formula. Is it unuseful too? --Freddyballo 23:07, 24 Septembris 2007 (UTC) PS ? I haven't found any guidelines about images?[reply]

Well, as you say, these pictures are trademarked, and therefore they cannot be freely used, modified, and redistributed. Trademarks are not free, they can be copyrighted (and they often are). The Latin vicipaedia is in no way different from commons:, which does not accept nonfree logos as well.

--UV 20:27, 29 Decembris 2007 (UTC)[reply]
