Group photo?[fontem recensere]

I was thinking of uploading a group photo from one of the Lexington Conventicula. Problem is that it's now severely frowned upon to upload images directly on la:, and I'm not really sure such a photo would be worthy of commons. And if I DO upload it to commons, that kind of screams out for an English article. And if we write an English article on the conventiculum, I have a feeling it will be gone before you can say statim delenda. Kbye. --Iustinus 06:15, 8 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You absolutely don't have to write an english article. The latin wikipedia has its own portal to the wikimedia commons which is international. In fact they have (different) stricter copyright standards than the english wikipedia concerning what you can upload. So mea sententia upload away!--Rafaelgarcia 06:27, 8 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure we're talking about the same problem. But I'm too tired to figure it out. We'll talk tomorrow ;) --Iustinus 06:37, 8 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you made the pic yourself, all you have to do is upload the file, say "Picture of students at Conventicula for article in Latin wikipedia." and choose a licence template like {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}} which is for self made pics (See more here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Image_copyright_tags) and stick it in the appropriate spot on the page. Soon after you should link to the pic from your article in Vicipaedia.--Rafaelgarcia 07:14, 8 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think the reasons why we prefer an upload to Commons are:
  1. We want that other Wikipedias can use the material.
  2. We do not have to worry about licenses here because this will be a Common('s) problem then.
So,
  1. if it is material nobody else wants, we need not upload it to Commons. It might be deleted there.
  2. if there is no problem with the license and Commons is not an option, we should upload it to Vicipaedia.

OK, Rafael, let me make this clear: my problem is not that I don't get how commons works, or that I don't realize it is compatible with la:, or that I don't know how to upload an image. I think Rolandus has understod me better. My problem is more that I'm thinking that it's silly to upload an image to commons if it is unlikely to be of interest to anyone but us. --Iustinus 15:01, 8 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I might also want to add a photo of the "Oecus Lautus" (of which I have more than a couple), to which pertains the same question somewhat. --Iustinus 16:50, 9 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In my view, if the licence is fine, the file should go on commons, as it is definitely within commons:Commons:Project scope: "files uploaded to the Commons have to be useful for some Wikimedia project. Media files that are not useful for any Wikimedia project are beyond the scope of Wikimedia Commons." Remember there is commons:Category:Latin, commons:Category:Modern Latin, commons:Category:Ancient Rome
If the licence has some problems that prohibit uploading to commons but if the licence still qualifies as en:Wikipedia:Fair use AND if the image is of special value to an encyclopedia in the Latin language (as opposed to encyclopedias written in other languages), I would say go ahead and upload it here – but some day we should write and discuss an EDP that explicitly regulates this (see wikimedia:Resolution:Licensing policy).
What do you think about this? Greetings, --UV 21:20, 10 Iunii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
