Arthurus Wellesley, primus dux de Wellington[1] (Eblanae die 30 Aprilis aut 1 Maii 1769 natus - 14 Septembris 1852 in oppido Walmer mortuus), fuit Britannicorum dux praestans ingenio domi militiaeque.

Nobili genere natus, anno 1787 nomen dedit et, loco suo favente, columnellus factus, Indiam ad Britannicos milites ducendos, anno 1797, pervenit. In India non solum excellentem ducem sed etiam provinciae procuratorem optimum virumque in legationibus obeundis versatum se ostendit: ibi octo annos moratus est, et cum in oppido Srirangapatna, Assaye et Argaum pugnas vicisset, in summa Mahrattes, Indianos indigenas, profligavit. Qua re “general sepoy” appellatus est.

In Britanniam reversus populus? legatus factus est et multa ampla munera sustinuit. Mense Aprili anni 1808 Lusitaniam dux missus est profligatum Francogallos qui eam regionem invaserant. Ibi primo in vico Vimeiro eos vicit, sed inde in oppidum Sintra profligatus est, quam ob rem pro aliis ducibus substitutus est.

Insequenti anno rursus in Lusitaniam reversus, Gallos pugna superavit saepius et, cum vicisset in Helmantica, Nova Victoria et Tolosa, eos certe profligavit anno 1814. Post victoriam apud Victoriacum, imperator factus est et, Napoleone in Franciam redito, anno 1815 missus est in Belgiam ut Napoleonem profligaret. In proelio Waterlooensi Wellington, Borussicorum exercitus, cui dux Blücher praefuit, auxilio, die 18 Iunii 1815 Napoleonem vicit et rursus in exilium eum pepulit. Post pugnam Waterlooensem, in qua paene quinquaginta milia militum ceciderunt, tam perculsus horrore fuit ut nunquam postea commissurus esset ullam pugnam.

Reditus in patriam honoratus et imperator acclamatus est, et etiam primus minister factus est. Wellesley multos annos etiam legatus apud Parlamentum Regni Uniti fuit. Anno 1852 mortuus est.

Vellingtonia, urbs Novozelandica, ex Arthuro Wellesley nominata est.
