Cyathea est genus pteridophytorum et typus ordinis Cyathealium. Plurimae Cyatheae sunt plantae terrestres, singulo cauli alto plerumque praeditae. Raro, truncus dividitur vel serpit. Multis speciebus ad fundamentum trunci est massa radicum fibrosarum. Geographica generis distributio est pantropica. Plusquam 470 species in habitationibus a silvis pluviis tropicis ad silvas temperatas inveniuntur.

Nomen Cyathea ex Graeco kyatheion 'poculum' deducitur, quod ad cupulatos in inferiore latere frondorum soros spectat.

Notissimae species sunt Cyathea brownii, Cyathea cooperi, Cyathea dealbata, Cyathea medullaris.

Haec classificatio investigationes Conant et aliorum anni 1996 consequitur, qui, ob indicia cpDNA molecularia et morphologica concluserunt systema trium cladorumAlsophila, Cyathea, Sphaeropteris, quo Alsophila est primum, et Cyathea Sphaeropterisque ex gregibus sororibus deducuntur—esse accuratissimam stirpium evolutionariarum intra Cyatheaceas descriptionem.
