Eduardus Hetzel Schafer, libris suis Edward H. Schafer nominatus (Seattli natus die 23 Augusti 1913; Alamedae in California die 9 Februarii 1991 mortuus), fuit sinologus et interpres textuum.
Denuo ab anno fere 1935 anthropologiae studuit apud universitates Californienses Angelopolitanam denuoque Berkeleiensem, ubi discipulus erat Alfredi Kroeber et Roberti Lowie.[2] Gradum magistri in Universitate Havaiorum anno 1940 ascendit, dissertatione Persian Merchants in China During the T'ang Dynasty recepta. Doctoratum apud Harvardianos autumno 1941 petivit, sed mense Decembri, post impulsum Iaponensium in Portum Margaritarum, tamquam linguista in tabularium inquisitionum navalium convocatus est.
Bello peracto Berkeleiam reditus est ubi philosophiae doctor promotus est, Petri Boodberg discipulus, dissertationis gratia The Reign of Liu Ch'ang, Last Emperor of Southern Han; A Critical Translation of the Text of Wu Tai shih. Ibi linguas orientales docere coepit. Anno 1949 (sicut alii orientalistae Berkeleienses septemdecim) expulsus est ut qui iuramentum contra communismum, ab universitate postulatum, recusavisset.[3] Post unum annum restitutus, professor anno 1958 factus est: professor titulo Agassiz rerum Sinensium anno 1969 promotus usque in annum 1984 fungebatur. Praeses Societatis Orientalis Americanae anno 1975/1976 electus est. Cancere iecoris affectus anno 1991 mortem obiit. Necrologia omnium prima in libellis Journal of Asian History divulgata vitam eius enarrat.[4]
Qui eis annis de imperio familiae Tang quaerebant opus Eduardi Schaefer praeter alios aestimabant: illum enim mundum antiquum dilucide et scrupulosissime e litteris coaevis restituit, praesertim in serie librorum quinque anno 1963 incepta, anno (1977) perfecta. His enim operibus sub vario aspectu res Sinenses recensuit, textibus crebrissime citatis et pellucide Anglice versis: videlicet exotica occidentalia in The Golden Peaches of Samarkand, raritates regionis meridianae in The Vermilion Bird, longinqua Hainania insula in Shore of Pearls, deae femineae in The Divine Woman, scientia et mythologia stellarum in Pacing the Void.
