There is a slight problem here, in that Ahmose I is usually given in Classical Languages as Amosis, whereas Ahmose II is traditionally refered to by his Herodotean name of Amasis (of course on the List of Pharaohs page, I dealt with this by having a link in the form of [[Amosis II|Amasis]], but I'm not sure if this is the best solution or not). The difference between the two has to do, of course, with Egyptian dialects: it seems that a short /a/ in a stressed syllable became /o/ in Bohairic and Sahidic Coptic--the two most important dialects--but stayed /a/ in all the others, and clearly this distinction goes "all the way back." As for your translation of the name, isn't it usually assumed that the ms in this name is in the "qualitative," and thus would translate to natus? --Iustinus 02:21, 6 Decembris 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm actually not sure.. I've seen it both ways, and real egyptological works rarely take the time to translate king names.

I don't think this is magni momenti. But for the record, I tend to prefer the "Pharaoh of Egypt" construction, because that is what you will see in titularies. Presumably "Egyptian Pharaoh" is a valid entity as well, but the distinction is subtle. --Iustinus 06:15, 6 Decembris 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I suppose the distinction becomes more important when you start talking about Pharaohs of Egypt who were of forreign origin, such as Taracus, Cambyses, Ptolemaeus I, and so on. --Iustinus 06:16, 6 Decembris 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Heheheh! Sorry. As you can tell I am interested in Greek & Latin forms of foreign names (see also religio Mesopotamena for a good example of what I like to waste my time on!), and in particular I have an interest in Late Period — Ptolemaic Egypt. So if you write about Pharaohs you might see me a lot. Hey, I think Manetho makes at least a short reference to Amosis driving out the Hycsos. Well, I'm trying to translate the english article, a FA which I helped to write. I forgot about it for a while, while I was at work on other english projects, but I hope to be getting to translating a rather lot of them, if for no other reason than to keep my skills from rusting ;) Any comments are of course helpful, as I anticipate making a few mistakes while I reacclamate to latin grammer.
