Iacobus Joyce, vulgo plene James Augustine Aloysius Joyce, fuit auctor Hibernicus qui mythistorias et carmina Anglice scripsit. Quamquam opera pauca illi sunt, auctoritate operum suorum litteras saeculi vicensimi adfecit Joyce. Clarissimus est propter opus Ulysses (1922). Alia opera sunt Dubliners (1914), A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) et Finnegans Wake (1939). Noram Barnacle anno 1931 in matrimonium duxit; quam autem primum die 16 Iunii 1904 coluerat, idem operis Ulysses dies actus et notus ut Bloomsday.

Quamquam plerumque adultus vitam ex patria egit, gesta Hibernica essentialia? sunt scripturae eius parantque fabulis omnes locos et multas materies. Praesertim, Iacobi discordia saxea cum Ecclesia Catholica significat discordia simile in persona Stephani Daedali, qui in duobus libris apparet. Dublinum basis mundi fabularum est. Vita cum familia, gesta amicique dierum in ludo conlegioque repraesentantur; Ulysses adamussim in viis veris angiportisque urbis effingetur. Voluntarius praeterea in continentem Europae, proprie Lutetiam Franciae fugit. Cura autem unius loci Dublini data, Joyce paradoxe et cosmopolitissimus et communalissimus omnium scriptorum illo tempore Anglicorum ferit.

Iacobus Augustinus Aloysius Joyce die 2 Februarii 1882 Dublini in suburbio Rathgar natus est, Ioanni Stanislao Joyce et Mariae Ioannae Murray filius. Veterrimus puerorum decem superentium erat; duo consanguineorum pestilentia occisi sunt. Familia patri, primitus ab Fermoy, Cork, quondam parva calce salarioque opera egerat.
