Greenspan bis nupsit = 'She married Greenspan twice'. :o IacobusAmor (disputatio) 12:44, 12 Iunii 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nice one. I think you can probably guess what the author meant, so you could simply correct it ... Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 13:11, 12 Iunii 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Err, why can't it be 'Greenspan married twice'? eg Greenspan divoced and then married another girl.--Jondel (disputatio) 13:14, 12 Iunii 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Does 'bis' have to the mean the same object( person)? It should refer to the verb nupsit only.--Jondel (disputatio) 13:15, 12 Iunii 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Iacobus's reason is that "nubo" in Latin is almost always used with a female subject. What our author could have written is (for example) "Greenspan bis uxores duxit". That's what I write if I want to say a similar thing. I edited this page today, but I'm a bit sleepy and never noticed this sentence! Now that I'm back here again, I'll change it. I have a lot to learn! Gosh, I wouldn't know. Thanks and thanks to Iacobus too. Here it is about 9:30 pm, just relaxing, in slang, just 'chiling'.Good night Andrew.--Jondel (disputatio) 13:32, 12 Iunii 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The basic sense of nubere is 'to cover'; hence nubes, nebula, nimbus. Particularly, however, the sense is: '(of a bride) to cover herself for the bridegroom'. That's why the husband is in the dative case, not the accusative. Martial applies this verb to a man to make a comical expression: uxori nubere nolo meae 'I don't want to marry (nubere) a wife' = 'I don't want to be a wife's wife' = 'I don't want to be dominated by a wife'. Very impressive. Wow. There is a saying among med students is 'The more you know, the more you don't know. Until finally, you know everything but know even more that you know absolutely nothing. sheesh. :)--Jondel (disputatio) 15:02, 12 Iunii 2016 (UTC)[reply]
