IPA
[fontem recensere]I deleted your two insertions of IPA pronunciation. I'll explain why, and we can discuss ... but I'll have to go out to the VE Day ceremony right now. Forgive me ... Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 08:28, 8 Maii 2019 (UTC)
- OK, I'm back. I hope it's OK to write in English: I'll write in Latin if you prefer.
- There are three reasons not to add IPA pronunciations of Latin to Vicipaedia articles in general.
- There have been many pronunciations of Latin, and there are probably many pronunciations among Vicipaedians! Luckily there's just one standard way to write Latin (with minor variants) and Vicipaedia is a written source.
- If one knows Latin, one knows exactly one's chosen pronunciation from the spelling (except for vowel length, which can be indicāted very simply if needed). So IPA doesn't help.
- Encyclopaedias need to be readable: first sentences especially need to be readable. Adding in parentheses a script that most readers don't understand hinders readability. If the pronunciation needs discussing, that would be best done in a later sentence about the name, the etymology, etc.
- If you disagree with these points, feel free to start a discussion at the Taberna! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 11:13, 8 Maii 2019 (UTC)
