Disputatio:Lingua Tupi

There is mention of this language in Jean de Léry's Historia Navigationis in Brasiliam, quotes from which you may read at caouinum. Unfortuantely in the Latin version does not change the orthography of forreign glosses from that of the original French, so the Tupinambá are refered to as Tououpinambaultii, which is admittedly rather silly. Along the same lines, I'd wonder if we shouldn't understand the "ou" of Caouinum to be French orthography for Latin /u/, so instead of

Caouinum (seu Caou-in seu Cavinum),

one wonders if the article shouldn't start something like

Cauinum (seu Caouinum seu Cavinum ; vulgo: Caou-in),

and somebody might check to see if later orthographers didn't use, say, Cauin or Kauin or whatever. IacobusAmor 19:44, 8 Februarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I wanted to go with the attested spelling I had when I wrote taht article (though I did cheat somewhat, using what is probably a typographical error to get a declinable form), but do note that cauinum is exactly equivalent to cavinum, and our usual orthographical rules would demand the v there (unless it's a separate syllable, which I don't think it's meant to be) --Iustinus 19:51, 8 Februarii 2007 (UTC)[reply]
