Hmm, it seems that the ancient name of Damietta was Tamiathis. This certainly sounds like Graecized Egyptian name, but so far I can't find the native form. --Iustinus (disputatio) 05:41, 26 Augusti 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and it looks like the Catholic Church still uses Tamiathis!
Linguistically this is a bit strange, because the Greek θ in Tamiathis points to an Egyptian *t, but the Arabic ط in ‏دمياط‎ points to an Egyptian *d. But stranger things have happened in Egyptian toponyms.

Feel free to add info to the text, and move if appropriate. I started the page merely as an anchor for links on medieval matters. "Damietta" is used in medieval Latin. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 08:19, 26 Augusti 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Granted, and in fact I hadn't even considered moving the page until you suggested it. But now that I think of it, given that Tamiathis is the ancient name, and the official church-name as well, that does make sense. --Iustinus (disputatio) 14:52, 26 Augusti 2012 (UTC)[reply]
