Notae nobis inutiles?[fontem recensere]

I deleted several of the notes from the first sentences. They were from English dictionaries and of little or no use in a Latin encyclopedia so far as I could see. I retained, but abridged, an English quotation that gives the origin of the Latin name, which is surely relevant!

I also deleted the Latin form "Americae" (pl.) It sounded to me like a retro-translation from English the Americas, which is fine as long as some reliable Latin source has used the term before us: hence on 11 June I tagged it "Fontes desiderati". The citations added were all English, so they didn't help. The term could be restored by all means, but with a proper source. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 17:32, 1 Iulii 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I atoned just a little bit for my deletion spree by adding a reference from modern Latin for America (not difficult, though we didn't have one before) and one that defines it as a terra continens, not a supercontinens, doubly useful therefore.
