Filius fuit et successor sultani Saʿīd ibn Taimūr quem ipse e regno die 23 Iulii 1970 deiecit. Qābūs alumnus est Academiae Militaris iuxta Sandhurst in Anglia. Annis 1962/1963 in exercitu Britannico militavit.
