Hi, Nadzik. To answer your question: yes, we do in certain cases categorize redirects. If you want further details, just ask! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 19:46, 12 Iunii 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Andrew Dalby! Should this be a case here? Cheers! Nadzik (disputatio) 20:33, 12 Iunii 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this is correct by our current practice on Vicipaedia. The reasons are
  1. the page deals with an Arabic forename among others: it would be unhelpful to put the pagename "Josephus" in the category of Arabic forenames (because "Josephus" is not an Arabic forename) but it is helpful to put the redirect "Yusuf" in that category (because "Yusuf" is an Arabic forename).
  2. "Categoria:Nominum redirectiones": it was thought useful to know what redirections of names exist, so a category has been created just for that. (Personally I'm not sure how useful "Categoria:Nominum redirectiones" will ever be, but if editors who work on name redirect pages believe it will be useful and maintain it, I think that's fine.)
Reason (1) has parallels in other contexts. Alternative names of astronomical bodies are categorized. Botanical/zoological synonyms are categorized. Alternative forms of common sayings and expressions are categorized. By doing this we put the pages in additional, useful categories in which they will file in the correct order -- and the reader can see and understand the filing order.
You can see examples of these at Categoria:Locutiones Anglicae, Categoria:Res astronomicae nominibus Messier agnitae, Categoria:Taxa Linnaei. MediaWiki makes all this easy to do, but whether other wikis do it in the same way, I don't know! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 20:59, 12 Iunii 2020 (UTC)[reply]
