Any objections to this? --Iustinus (disputatio) 19:59, 4 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't work for me, that's the only objection :) Can you suggest a font I should install, Iustine? Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 20:08, 4 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, currently the formula invokes any of the following fonts: "'Lucida Blackletter', 'Old English MT', 'Old English', 'Blackmoor LET', blackletter;"--this was a trick suggested to me back in '08 by Nick Shanks, when I was writing rapperia. But perhaps a better strategy is to expand the list of fonts listed in the template, rather than expecting users to download the ones listed. Not being that versed in coding, though, I'm not sure: can we plug in whatever font we want in this list, or is there a limited set the coding language recognizes? --Iustinus (disputatio) 20:52, 4 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The language in question is CSS and/or HTML. You can list whatever fonts you like. The list is in order, so the first one that is installed on the user's machine is the one that will be displayed, provided the user's browser preferences allow a web page to specify fonts (as is typically true -- this is the default for most browsers).
(A footnote: Of course this trick assumes all the fonts have the same encoding for the letters -- that is, that A is in position 65 of the character list (represented by number 65 or a byte containing 0100 0001), followed by B, C, and so on. That's probably fine for fancy roman letters like this, but this trick won't work for converting among various antiquated Greek fonts.) A. Mahoney (disputatio) 18:35, 5 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, Andrew, what "gothic" fonts do you already have? --Iustinus (disputatio) 18:50, 5 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out I don't have any. This explains my difficulty :) I just need to find a good free one, I guess. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 21:18, 5 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, the problem is remedied easily enough! Be sure to add your font to the list, if necessary, once you've taken care of this. --Iustinus (disputatio) 23:22, 5 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How does the formula know which font to use, 'Lucida Blackletter' or 'Old English MT' or 'Old English' or 'Blackmoor LET', blackletter, and so on? --Alex1011 (disputatio) 16:33, 6 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Secundum A. Mahoney, it picks the first font on the list that the user has installed. --Iustinus (disputatio) 17:43, 6 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Habemusne et fontem cum Littera s longa? --Alex1011 (disputatio) 22:09, 4 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rogasne utrum sit fontem locutionis quae est "littera s long," an utrum sit "fontem" (sensu moderno, nempe litterarum formam) cui sit hic character? --Iustinus (disputatio) 22:32, 4 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Litterarum typum cui ille character. --Alex1011 (disputatio) 15:13, 5 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nunc credo me intellegere: vis typum Gothicum cum es longa. Bonum interrogatum: nulli typi quos habeo apud me his criteriis conformant! Cur hoc sit nescio... habeo enim, exempli gratia, typum qui scriptionem manualem immitat, inclusa ſ. Quanam re character is typo manuali inest, neque ullo typo gothico? --Iustinus (disputatio) 17:47, 5 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sunt autem eiusmodi typi quibus et es longa inest, sed "can we plug in whatever font we want in this list, or is there a limited set the coding language recognizes?" Quos typos vicipaedia permittit? --Alex1011 (disputatio) 21:28, 5 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Secundum A. Mahoney, omnes. --Iustinus (disputatio) 23:22, 5 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Danke schön, Justin und Alex! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 17:06, 6 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I prefer Schwabacher because I find it more legible. So I have added it at the end of the list. It works for me, but if I have spoiled things for others, please revert. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 17:15, 6 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to be working fine for me. Are you seeing the font you want to see? Presumably this template will require a lot of maintenance for this kind of thing. --Iustinus (disputatio) 17:43, 6 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So this works only ad personam?! If you don't have the font, it doesn't work. --Alex1011 (disputatio) 23:04, 6 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Precisely. Ideally we should add all the most common blackletter fonts to the list, and perhaps order the based on some criterion or other. I suppose alternately 𝔬𝔫𝔢 𝔠𝔬𝔲𝔩𝔡 𝔲𝔰𝔢 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔪𝔞𝔱𝔥𝔢𝔪𝔞𝔱𝔦𝔠𝔞𝔩 𝔉𝔯𝔞𝔠𝔱𝔳𝔯 𝔤𝔩𝔶𝔭𝔥𝔰 of unicode, but in my opinion that's even dicier. --Iustinus (disputatio) 23:10, 6 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alex, should I take this to mean it's not working for you? --Iustinus (disputatio) 23:21, 6 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It works for me, but
depending on the computer I use (private or job) I see different fonts, well, because different fonts are installed.
If I would add a font with a long s, the key might be for a +-sign, I could see the long s, but others without that font would see a +-sign, I assume.
There are font families which consist of several fonts, ex.gr. "normal", "bold", "italic" and "special characters" (the latter possibly with a long s). The formula, of course, cannot use two fonts at a time. --Alex1011 (disputatio) 12:50, 7 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ideally, the formula should include some way to choose among fonts. --Alex1011 (disputatio) 12:55, 7 Decembris 2012 (UTC)[reply]
