Disputatio:Oriens

I think perhaps this page should be a simple redirect to sol oriens since in latin "oriens" as substantive means "sol oriens" (an overspecification) and as a participle means "rising" in general. The meaning east is secondary, is should be indicated by a discretiva from the sol oriens page. As similar thing for occidens.

I think perhaps this is a common error of students mapping latin to english. Latin doesn't have a distinct separate word for east or west, but indicates them indirectly by the words for sunrise (oriens) and sunset (occidens). Similarly, meridies means midday and also is used to indicate south, or alternatively auster (south wind). And north is indicated either by reference to the north wind (boreas) or the big dipper (septentrio). --Rafaelgarcia 23:02, 29 Augusti 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK I just thought of an objection to the above. THe other wikis have separate pages for east, west, etc. so we shouls have such pages. I would suggest then moving to oriens (plaga) or oriens (punctum cardinale)?--Rafaelgarcia 00:00, 30 Augusti 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a good question. I don't feel sure. It's fine to have all the pages, I guess, as long as they will eventually be more than just definitions.
