Husnius?

Since the beginning (or 2006 at the latest), we've experienced a contrast between broad & narrow interpretations of attestation and what "noli fingere" implies. The narrowest interpretation is that an attested form applies only to an individual human or a specific thing, so that, even with an attestation of "Ioannes Sebastianus Bachius," we must nevertheless use the vernacular Bach (and shun Bachius) for the surname of his sons, unless we find such attestations for them particularly. A broader interpretation might allow us to use Bachius for them, but not for other Bachs. The broadest interpretation would allow Bachius for anyone having the vernacular surname Bach. Similarly, we have the well-attested Ultonia for the Irish county vernacularly known as Ulster, but the author of Vicipaedia's article on Ulster County, New York, didn't accept (or know about) that attestation and so gave us Ulster Comitatus. Likewise, we have well-attested examples of Lutetia for the city vernacularly called Paris, but the narrowest interpretation of "noli fingere" doesn't allow us to use that name for Paris, Texas, unless we find a Latin attestation for that particular settlement. A casual review of personal & geographic names will turn up numerous examples of these kinds of distinctions. ¶ The broadest interpretation of "noli fingere" recognizes that living languages adapt foreign words to their own phonetics & syntax, so Giuseppe Mazzini becomes our attested Iosephus Mazzinius—which, in turn, can regularly become an attestation that supports the general transformation of vernacular -ni into Latin -nius. (Also, we can find several attestation of surnames ending in -nio being transformed into Latin -nius.) An instructive case is that of Leif Ericson, anciently attested as Leifus Erissonius but rendered in Vicipaedia without an attestation as Leivus Erici filius. The use of X in the genitive + filius appears in numerous lemmata here without specific Latin attestations, revealing that Vicipaedia is open to using the broadest interpretation of "noli fingere," at least with regard to patronymics.
