Filius fuit Ḫalīfa ibn Ḥamad Āl Ṯānī et pronepos ʿAbdallāh ibn Ǧāsim Āl Ṯānī emirorum Quatariae. Alumnus est Academiae Militaris iuxta Sandhurst. Emirus et primus minister se proclamavit, patre a regno deiecto, die 27 Iunii 1995. Usque in diem 29 Octobris 1996 officium primi ministri retinuit, quo successor fuit ʿAbdallāh ibn Ḫalīfa Āl Ṯānī, frater ex alia matre. Emirus fuit usque ad 25 Iunii 2013. Eo die principatum Tamīm filio tradidit.
