Object history Der angreifende silberne Schwan in der oberen Hälfte wird dem Wappen eines historisch nicht gesicherten Herzog Otto von Ammerthal (auch Ambergdol) zugeschrieben und findet sich auf dem im 14. Jahrhundert erstmals angelegten, später mehrmals veränderten Wappenfries in der Klosterkirche von Kastl. Trotz der fragwürdigen Überlieferung war es der Wunsch der Gemeinde, den Schwan, mit dem man sich bereits seit längerem identifiziert hatte, im Wappen zu führen. Die Generaldirektion der Staatlichen Archive Bayerns hielt die gewählte Gestaltung schließlich auch für vertretbar. Die Rot-Silber-Spaltung in der unteren Schildhälfte ist vom Wappen des um 1373 verstorbenen Hermann Ammerthaler abgeleitet, dem letzten Inhaber der Hofmark Oberammerthal aus der Familie der Ammerthaler. Dessen Wappen ist ebenfalls auf einer Darstellung in der Kastler Klosterkirche überliefert.
