Fossilia inflammabilia Fomes fossilis

Fuel is a bit difficult. Pitkäranta gives fomes. If accepted, then Fomes fossilis. --Neander 20:14, 20 Aprilis 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Words says fomes means "chips of wood"..fomes fossiles then would be "chips of wood that are dug up"?--Rafaelgarcia 20:24, 20 Aprilis 2008 (UTC)[reply]
:–)   Well, perhaps so for classical authors. But already Avienus uses fomes when speaking of 'nutrimentum ignis' in general. This is a natural process of meaning extention (cf. mouse 'rodent' > 'computer device'). I picked a sentence from Francis Bacon: Fomes autem flammae videtur esse oleum et pinguia. --Neander 22:25, 20 Aprilis 2008 (UTC)[reply]
