Disputatio:Deserta

This word is normally neuter plural, Deserta -orum. Alternatively we could put it under tesqua (which is itself spelled like five different ways) --Iustinus 08:11, 5 Decembris 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In my eyes it is a difficult word: deserta, -orum vel regio deserta vel loca deserta; in the Bible: desertum, -i; influenced from Biblical Latin afterwards desertum prevails: Ambrosius, Isidorus Hispalensis, Caesarius Heisterbachensis, Petrarca (Itinerarium ad sepulcrum Domini), Life of St. Columba etc. - Also in science: Dipodomys deserti, Macrovipera deserti, Ammomanes deserti. What do use then for types of deserts: Regio deserta arida vel regio arida vel deserta (-orum) arida vel desertum aridum? Or for topographic names: Deserta Arabica vel Desertum Arabicum? In the bible desertum means wilderness, an uninhabited or abandoned place, which usually in that region is a desert but not always. And this meaning makes sense given the meaning of desero. If so just desertum, meaning the *primary* climate sense of english term desert (not the biblical sense which is the same as latin) seems wrong. In fact many deserts in the middle east are not deserta (sensu latino 'abandoned or uninhabited'), but thickly settled with cities.

On the other hand, re deserta plural, it not only seems unnecessary to me to pluralize, but does not really help any better to convey the idea of desert in the sense required by the page.
