Summarium

Descriptio
English: Detail of a marvelous mosaic of Christ from the Hagia Sophia in Instanbul. It is the central figure of the so called Deësis mosaic (Δέησις, "Entreaty") which probably dates from a relatively late 1261. It is considered by many to be the finest mosaic in Hagia Sophia. It is also unusually realistic for a byzantine work. Observe for example the depiction of single strands of hair on the beard or of the shadow that falls across Christ's throat. This is a large and well detailed image, even though I took it with a point and shoot camera. It captures well the physical medium of the mosaic. I believe but only from memory, that the colors are quite realistic too.
