Descriptio
English: "Potnia Theron", Greek for "Mistress of Animals": Fresco from the bronze age excavation site of Akrotiri on the Greek island Santorini. This fresco is interpreted as showing a goddess on the right hand site, seated on a throne, protected by a griffin behind her, that she holds on a leash. To the left and in front of her a monkey depicted in blue offers a bowl to her with raised arms, while a young woman pours flowers of the saffron crocus in a large bowl. The fresco is part of a large wall painting, dubbed the "saffron gatherers", that covers two walls in an upper floor room of the building "Xeste 3". This building interpreted to be a place of initiation and rites of passage due to an adyton in the group floor and diverse frescoes all over the building.
