Object history
Français : L'original, réalisé en 1776 et exposé au Salon de 1777, est considéré par Bellendy (1913) comme disparu. Il est connu par une gravure de Muller et par un croquis de C. de Saint-Aubin sur le livret du Salon. Cependant l'exemplaire de Montauban est bien de la main de Duplessis. De plus ses qualités indéniables en font une version très supérieure à toutes les répliques ou copies connues (Carnavalet, Versailles, Besançon, Valenciennes, Louvre). Il s'agit sûrement de l'exemplaire original, provenant des collections royales plutôt que de celle de Mgr Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, évêque de Montauban, comme le prétendait Forestié en 1907
