Object history

(Ambroise Vollard [1867-1939], Paris); by descent to Chrétien de Gallea, Paris.[1] (Edward Speelman, AG, Zurich); sold January 1965 to Paul Mellon, Upperville, Virginia; gift 1983 to NGA.

[1] According to information provided by Speelman to Paul Mellon in 1965. Vollard's collection was inherited by his brother, Lucien, and by the dealer's mistress, Mme de Galea. On the movement of the Vollard collection during World War II, see Lynn Nicholas, The Rape of Europa, New York, 1994: 92-93, 304-305, 425.

Notae From NGA Website:
Later in her career Mary Cassatt often painted the theme of a little girl wearing an oversized hat in poses similar to this one. However this child's serious expression sets the painting apart from other portraits. Most of the girls in Cassatt's paintings of children in hats appear to be willing and happy models; they smile and wear elaborate bonnets and frilly dresses. In Child in a Straw Hat, the little girl wears a plain, gray pinafore and a large, simple straw hat. Her furrowed brow and protruding upper lip suggest that she is impatient; she may have been taken away from her play in order to pose.

Permissio
(Reusing this file)
This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

The author died in 1926, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 95 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that Mexico has a term of 100 years and does not implement the rule of the shorter term, so this image may not be in the public domain in Mexico.
The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
