Diencephalon[1][2][3] sive thalamencephalon[1][2] (TA: 14.1.03.007 velut 14.1.08.001) est pars encephali, iuxta ventriculum cerebri tertium sita. Diencephalon, quod olfactum, visum, auditum, tactum et sensus psychicos efficit, divisum est in thalamum, epithalamum, subthalamum, hypothalamum, metathalamum.
Conformatione ontogenesis diencephalon est una ex vesiculis cerebri principalibus tribus[4]: in embryogenese hebdomade tertia tuba neuralis ex ectodermate creata est, ex quo prosencephalon generatum est, quod paulo post dividitur in telencephalon et diencephalon.

Thalamus
Ambi thalami sunt transitus principales signorum nervalium et in cerebri cortices ingredentium et a corticibus egredientium. Praeterea nuclei intralaminares a formatio reticulari termini nervorum eius afferentium accipiunt.
Stria medullaris thalami
Stria medullaris thalami epithalomo attribuitur et fasciculum cum fibris afferentibus ad habenulam est. Origines eius sunt nuclei septales, regio praeoptica hypothalami atque nucleus anterior thalami.
Profectio ex prosencephalo (ontogenesis)
Structurae diencephali ex tuba neurali generantur, ubi in hebdomade tertia in parte rostrali (capitis) ex tuba primum tres vesiculae oriuntur, posterius in transitu ad medullam spinalem rhombencephalon, antea in medio (μέσο-) mesencephalon, plane antea (πρός- ad) prosencephalon. Progenitor vero diencephali est divisio mediana prosencephali.
Malum diencephali
Mala diencephali diversis morbis causa evolvi possunt, per exemplum encephalitidibus, tumoribus, infartibus ischaemicis vel haemorrhagicis. Nimirum gradus mali non raro loco detrimenti magnitudineque eius sequere. Mala et morbi diencephalo perturbantia effectus functionis graviores cerebri efficere possunt.
