Alumnus fuit universitatis Rutgersensis breveque temporis spatium Harvardianae. Ad studia geographiae culturalis conversus Berkeleiae apud universitatem Californiensem gradum doctoratus anno 1956 accepit, Caroli Sauer discipulus, dissertatione prolata The peoples and economy of Begemden and Semyen, Ethiopia.

Docuit apud universitatem Wisconsinensem ab anno 1957, interdum et alibi, sed ab anno 1969 fuit professor geographiae apud universitatem Californiensem in urbe Davis institutam.
