Object history
English: Riedlingen was founded around 1250 by Count Wolfrat of Veringen. It gained market town rights in 1276 and city rights in 1334. From 1291–1805 the city was an Austrian possession, however often pawned. Since 1805 it is part of Württemberg. The oldest city seal from the late 13th century already displayed two oars and a lion, the former being canting for its then name Rudelingen. The origin of the lion is still unknown, though Otto Hupp claimed, it would be the Habsburg lion. In the 16th century the oars were placed upon the Austrian arms. Sources from the 18th century often omitted the lion.
