Arms of the Kingdom of Naples 1808 (King: Joachim Murat)

Drawn by Theo van der Zalm

After Napoleon conquered Spain in 1808 he had his brother Joseph, King of Naples, made king there. His brother in law, Joachim Murat, until then Grand duke of Berg, took over the throne of Naples 1st August 1808. He adopted arms at first just showing the imperial eagle, the black horse of Naples and the three-legged head of Sicily. As grand admiral of the empire he hold on to the anchor behind the shield as in the arms of Berg. Around the shield was the Order of the Grand Aigle combined with that of the ‘Due Sicilie’ (Two Sicilies), initiated by himself. King Gioacchino I sometimes used a blue mantle with chequered borders in red and white.

Secondly Naples adopted grand arms. adding again the two mermaids as shield holders, the shield now quartered in a disorderly fashion showing icons of all Napolitan provinces and over all the imperial eagle with the anchor on its own ermine fettered mantle. Around the shield now just the Order of the Two Sicilies. A helmet replaced Napoleons star above the shield. aventino 11:39, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
