Deutsch: „In Rot siebzehn ganze und zwei halbe kugelförmige goldene (gelbe) Schildbuckel in sechs Reihen.“ Der Landkreis ist Nachfolger der zuletzt gefürsteten Grafschaft Bentheim. Das gleichnamige Geschlecht beherrschte da Gebiet seit 12. Jahrhundert. 1606 kam es zur Teilung der Linien Bentheim und Steinfurt. 1848 wurden die letzten Hohheitsrechte an Hannover abgetreten. Im Kreiswappen erscheint aus diesem Grunde die älteste Form des Zeichens der Grafenfamilie, welches auf dem Schild Metallbeschläge (Schildbuckel) in Kugelform auswies. Die Bedeutung ist unbekannt.
English: „Gules, seventeen full and two half bezants in six rows.“ The arms were granted on May 20, 1955. The arms are identical to the original arms of the Counts of Bentheim. These counts were very influential and ruled their territory from a mighty castle since the 12th century. In 1606 the county was split in two lines, Bentheim and Steinfurt. The present Counts of Bentheim still use the same arms. The origin of the arms is unknown.
