Deutsch: Das Wappen von Göttingen is abgeleitet vom ältesten Siegel der Stadt aus dem Jahr 1278. Es zeigt den Löwen der welfischen Herzöge. Es weist darauf hin, dass die Stadt früher zum Herzogtum Braunschweig-Lüneburg gehörte. Der Bogen und the Türme symbolisieren die Stadtbefestigung und zeigen an, dass Göttingen schon früh im Besitz der Stadtrechte war.
English: The arms are derived from a seal of 1278. They show a fortifikation and the lion of Brunswick.
