I guess the brackets serve to disambiguate the topic from Providentia, Rhodensis Insulae.

On a side note: For the latter page, I would prefer Providentia (Rhodensis Insula) or Providentia (urbs). In MediaWiki, the brackets serve to disambiguate pages, so, e. g. in a philosophical text, you can write [[Providentia (virtus)|]] (with the “pipe symbol” near the end) and this will show up just as Providentia. --UV 00:16, 16 Iunii 2006 (UTC)[reply]
