De nomine et definitione[fontem recensere]

I changed this into a genus page because the preceding version, evidently a translation from English, said that "ostrea" is the common name for bivalves of several families. No source was cited for the claim and I don't believe it's true. "Oyster" is said to be the common name for bivalves of several families, and maybe it is, but that's a different claim, and I can't think of any Latin equivalent for this English use of "oyster" unless it might be "conchylium" ... But then "conchylium" had better not be linked with English "oyster" because it does better as an equivalent for "seafood", one of the 10,000. That was my thinking, anyway. I see from the history that when first written this page (as equivalent to English "oyster") was destined to be among the 10,000. It isn't in the 10,000 now: perhaps "seafood", our "conchylium", took its place. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 16:58, 5 Ianuarii 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly. In any case, the list of 10,000 is an imperfect instrument, and any respectable encyclopedia should have an article on oysters! IacobusAmor (disputatio) 17:43, 5 Ianuarii 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. Don't worry, I seem to be temporarily fixated on the human pursuit of oysters (and tuna) and will ensure full coverage! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 09:52, 8 Ianuarii 2020 (UTC)[reply]
