"Civilisatio"

Surely an abomination for civilizatio (itself presumably a newish word)? The pattern of the infinitive is -izare, from Greek -izein. Zee, not ess. IacobusAmor 14:42, 18 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)

There are those who argue for -iso in Latin (there are a number of such words attested), but I am not in that number. But more to the point, we really should use the non-newish word civitas or better yet cultus civilis rather than resort to unnecessary modernisms. --Iustinus 17:06, 18 Ianuarii 2007 (UTC)

Somebody told me that Gandhi, when asked what he thought of the civilization of the West, said he thought it would be a very good idea. Fortunately I'd have thought Latin "civilizatio" would naturally carry the implication on which Gandhi was playing (the task of civilizing, rather than the existence of a civilization).
