Disputatio:Hugo de Paganis

History?

We need to verify this if we can. There are two English articles in competition, en:Ugo de' Pagani, which was added as interwiki link today, and en:Hugues de Payens, which I happened to find yesterday, but didn't link because of the basic contradictions. Which is nearer the truth I don't yet know. Evidently nationalism is playing a part.

For the moment I have taken out his place of birth because, at a quick glance, that is the essence of the dispute.

I see that on the Italian wiki the two have been combined at it:Hugues de Payns, and there is a long discussion at it:Discussione:Hugues de Payns; i.e. the French name has been preferred. That suggests to me that the Campanian campaigners are on to a loser. But there's a lot to read. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 13:22, 11 Maii 2012 (UTC)

I'd noticed that there's some debate about where he's from; I'm also not entirely sure about his name in Latin, though there will certainly be a source for that. Oh, yes, certainly an improvement! I think the name "Hugo de Paganis" is probably quite OK. I notice that the Catalan wiki describes him (surprise?) as Catalan in origin, so there we have a third view. Possibly no one knows ...

Ah, William's text is on line (I hadn't got as far as the article about the text) -- perhaps he has a theory on Hugo's origin, which we'd want to cite. I'll be in the library later and will check around in a couple of books about the Templars (also rather a disputed area, I gather) just in case there's anything useful. For the moment, though, I think we may want to link to en:Hugues de Payens (slighly less strident article) instead of en:Ugo de' Pagani -- since I put in the first link, I'll just change it; I note you've proposed merging the two in English, which is definitely the right idea whatever content ends up in the resulting page.
