Nomina ecclesiarum cathedralium

[fontem recensere]

Perhaps likelier among Roman & Anglican cathedrals (but then again perhaps not), the phrase "cathedral [church] of [city] X" will be a descriptor, and the true proper name will specify the saint to which the building is dedicated. Using that model for this church might produce a lemma & definition something like this: "Ecclesia Cathedralis Sancti Laurentii est ecclesia cathedralis Lundensis, sedes Episcopi Lundensis in Ecclesia Suetica constituta." In other words, seeming names like Coventry Cathedral and Washington National Cathedral and such, though they may be by far the most usually heard forms in vulgar discourse, function more as bynames, and the saint-specifying versions represent the nomina propria—in the cited cases, the Cathedral of St Michael, Coventry and the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington, respectively. Of course it's possible, as in the English wiki, to take the popular descriptor for the lemma and make the proper name a textual afterthought; however, omitting the proper name altogether, as in the current text of this article, makes for an inadequate definition. Appropriate authorities might be consulted. IacobusAmor (disputatio) 13:23, 18 Iulii 2013 (UTC)[reply]

For a history that reveals these points, see the building that, under control of a Reformed Protestant church, for more than thirty years has had the proper name The Crystal Cathedral, but, having been purchased by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange, is set to become the Ecclesia Cathedralis Christi. Presumably in everyday speech it'll still be described as—but no longer named—the crystal cathedral. IacobusAmor (disputatio) 13:59, 18 Iulii 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree about real names. As you suggest above, it is convenient in general for pages about cathedrals to have a title that is brief and includes the name of the city/diocese. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 14:33, 18 Iulii 2013 (UTC)[reply]
