Why not Anglarias ? I read a document that suggests it was named ANGLARIAS in 644. I don't think Anglarias is the accusative case...it's just a name...I don't know lol -- [Pirate]

Yes, this Anglarias in 644 is also cited in the book that I put in the footnote.

It can't be "just a name", as you say: it has to be in some grammatical case. That's how it is with Latin. The question is, which case? It is very rare -- rarissime! -- for names in Latin to end in -as in the nominative case, unless they are borrowed from Greek. Therefore, the most likely is that this is an accusative and that the nominative is Anglariae. This is very logical because it would be a normal antecedent for the French name Angliers: French nouns and names with a plural form, if descended from Latin, usually descend from the accusative (or at least an oblique case), not the nominative.

We can really only verify this by looking at the text of the orginal 644 document. Does your source cite any more of it, or just this one word? Anyway, if you really don't like my logic, you can change the name back. I won't revert you! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 15:09, 26 Augusti 2007 (UTC)[reply]
