According to en:, this university's Latin name is Universitas Bononiensis and its motto is alma mater studiorum. Mattie (disputatio) 17:54, 28 Aprilis 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I thought we'd had some discussion of this but I don't know where. I understood that "Alma Mater Studiorum" really is its Latin name -- it is the oldest university of all, by usual definitions -- but I can't tell you straight off why I think this ... I chose a different name for the category not because I doubted that "Alma Mater Studiorum" was the real name, but just because an ordinary descriptor seemed more useful in the category context. Maybe an expert will show up and tell us one way or the other. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 18:06, 28 Aprilis 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's why I opened up a disputatio rather than moving the page myself. :-) Mattie (disputatio) 18:24, 28 Aprilis 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Note the heading at top left of the home page. That seems to highlight "Alma Mater Studiorum" as if it's the original or historical name, rather than a motto. But I readily agree it's no proof.
But also look at the copyright statement at the foot of that same page. That would be an odd place to put a motto. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 18:47, 28 Aprilis 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Tu sembles avoir raison: fr: nous explique que "L'université de Bologne ... a pris le nom d'Alma mater studiorum par un décret de 2000." So, given that and what's on its website, I guess that really is its name! Mattie (disputatio) 19:01, 28 Aprilis 2012 (UTC)[reply]
