Alfredus North Whitehead, OM, Socius Societatis Regalis (15 Februarii 186130 Decembris 1947), fuit mathematicus et philosophus Anglicus, latissime notus conditor scholae philosophicae quae, philosophia rationalis (Anglice process philosophy) appellata,[1] in variissimis disciplinis hodie adhibetur, inter quas oecologia, theologia, educatio, physica, biologia, oeconomica, et psychologia.

Whitehead iuvenis praecipue de mathematica, logica, et physica scripsit. Sua opera in his disciplinis notissima sunt tria volumina Principiorum Mathematicorum (1910–13), quae cum Bertrando Russell discipulo composuit. Principia Mathematica unum habetur ex gravissimis saeculi vicensimi operibus logicae mathematicae.

Ex decennio 192 exeunte, Whitehead gradatim a mathematica ad philosophiam scientiae animadvertit, et ad ultimum ad metaphysicam. Evolvit amplam rationem metaphysicam quae a plurimo philosophiae Occidentalis penitus discessit. Whitehead arguit realitatem non in rebus materialibus, sed in rationibus consistere, quae optime definiuntur per eorum coniunctiones cum aliis rationibus, ergo theoriam reiciens quae dicit realitatem funditus construi ex aliquantulis materiae libere inter se exsistentibus.[2] Opera philosophica Whiteheadiana—praecipue Process and Reality ('Ratio et Realitas')—hodie fundamenta philosophiae rationalis habentur.

Philosophia rationalis Whiteheadiana arguit "necessitatem inhaerere in mundum ut tela rationum inter se coniunctarum visum, cuius partes necessariae sumus, ut omnes electiones et facta nostra mundo circa nos consecutiones habent."[3][4] Quam ob causam, una ex adhibitionibus cogitationis Whiteheadianae optima spe in disciplinis civilizatione oecologica et ethica circumiectorum naturalium annos recentiores fuit, Ioanne B. Cobb minore auctore.[5]
