Hippocampus (Graece: hippos 'equus' + kampos 'monstrum marinum'[3]) est genus piscum subfamiliae Hippocampinarum familiae Syngnathidarum ordinis Syngnathiformium. Familia subfamiliam Syngnathinas quoque comprehendit.

Sunt circa quadraginta hippocamporum species, praecipue in tropicis temperatisque maribus humilibus per orbem terrarum endemicae. Se in tutelam herbarum marinarum, scopulorum curalii, et mangalium recipiunt. Coloniae in aquis Europaeis sicut Aestuarium Thamesis inveniuntur.[4]
