Object history
Deutsch: Das Wappen mit dem einbärtigen Schlüssel ist dem alten Landessiegel, mit dem der älteste Bundesbrief von 1291 und die folgenden Bundesbriefe gesiegelt wurden, entnommen. Dieses Siegel wurde um 1240 für das untere Tal (Nidwalden) ausgefertigt. Durch Ergänzen der Umschrift mit dem Zusatz "et vallis superioris" wurde es nach 1291 zum Landessiegel des Gesamtkantons Unterwalden. Seit der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts, als Nidwalden ein eigenes Siegel hatte, wurde dieses Siegel auch als Standessiegel von Obwalden verwendet. Dieses durfte bis in die neueste Zeit vom jeweiligen Landammann in seinem Haus aufbewahrt werden. Heute wird es im Staatsarchiv Obwalden aufbewahrt.Im Wappen des Kantons Obwalden hingegen erscheint der Schlüssel erstmals auf der Supraporta über dem Haupteingang des Rathauses von 1729/31, das heisst die alte Form des Wappens, ein in eine obere rote und untere weisse Hälfte geteiltes Feld, wurde mit dem Schlüssel ergänzt. Nach diesem Erscheinen verschwand die neue Form wieder; erst fast hundert Jahre später, im Jahr 1816, wurde das mit dem Schlüssel versehene rot/weiss geteilte Feld zum offiziellen Kantonswappen erklärt.[1]
