English: Saint Paul writing. From an early 9th century manuscript version of Saint Paul's letters. Württembergische Landesbibliothek Stuttgart, HB II 54 (Description page in German). The manuscript is ascribed to the Monastery of St. Gallen under the scribe Wolfcoz. The picture follows an early medieval tradition of depicting the author of a text. It is believed to be one of the earliest depictions of Saint Paul in European art. The inscription says: "S(AN)C(TU)S PAULUS" and "sedet hic scripsit" ("he sits here and writes").
