Bacterium (e Graeco βακτήριον 'parvum baculum') est dominium biotum vitalium quod solum ex una cellula constat et nucleum non habet. Organismus est minimus qui longitudine nonnulla micrometra patet. Bacteria multas formas habere possunt; exempli gratia, formas sphaerae, virgae, cocleae. Pars microbiologiae quae de bacteriis agit bacteriologia appellatur.
Bacteria ubique sunt, et parva aliqua eorum sunt causa morborum.
