But is the syntax appropriate? Grammar books bridle at allowing a gerund to govern a direct object. Professor Gildersleeve (#427): "Instead of the Gerund with an Accusative Object, the object is generally put in the case of the Gerund, with the Gerundive as an Attribute." Bradley's Arnold (#385): "The use of the gerund with a direct object is, in general, avoided unless the object is a neuter pronoun or adjective" (neither of which it is here). Bradley's Arnold again (#395): "The gerundive construction is, in general, preferred to a gerund with an accusative." Allen & Greenough (#503): "When the Gerund would have an object in the Accusative, the Gerundive is generally used instead. The gerundive agrees with its noun, which takes the case that the gerund would have had." These admonitions would appear to lead to Consociatio Civitatum Petrolei Exportandi. Would 24.183.186.151 care to explain why we should prefer the disparaged gerund–accusative construction instead? IacobusAmor (disputatio) 14:07, 18 Ianuarii 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I fear he hasn't been back for some time, but, as for me (since I just edited the page) I'm quite happy for you to replace his suggestion with yours. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 15:27, 18 Ianuarii 2013 (UTC)[reply]
