What should we call "Dunedin", which was named by its Scots settlers after an ancient word for "Edinburgh" - "Edimburgum (Anglice Edinburgh, Gaelice Dùn Eideann) urbs in Scotia est"? Robin Patterson 00:35 mai 2, 2004 (UTC)

Carolus Egger's Lexicon Nominum Locorum gives the predictable Dunedinum, adj. Dunedinesis.

Deus Defendat Novam Zelandiam[fontem recensere]

The original form here was Deus Defende Novam Zelandiam, but the imperative would require a comma (Deus, Defende Novam Zelandiam), acceptance of later Latin's use of Deus as a vocative, and maybe the presumption that human beings can command God to do things, whereas the English makes clear that the verb is subjunctive (as in "God Save the Queen" and "God rest you merry, gentlemen" and "God Bless America"), hence the correct Latin: Deus Defendat Novam Zelandiam. Of course whether the title should be in Latin here at all is another question. IacobusAmor 12:25, 19 Iulii 2008 (UTC)[reply]
