Haec inscriptio Latina antiquissima ex foro Romano modo fere boustrophedo inscripta est: versus 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16 ex sinistra parte ad dexteram currunt, versus 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 13, and 15 ex dextera ad sinistram. Versus autem 8, 9, 16 inverti sunt (summa imis confunduntur).

Bustrophedon (Graece: βουστροφηδόν) est modus scribendi quo litterae versuum alternorum in alternas partes currunt, ut potest videri in legibus Gortyniis. Nomen boustrophedon trahitur ex itinere bovum (Graece βοῦς) in agro, qui se vertunt (verbum Graecum στρέφω) cum aratrum trahunt ab uno latere ad alterum.
